After wrestling at UNC Chapel Hill as the Tar Heel heavyweight and earning a degree in exercise science, he headed to Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg. When I got this in the 70s' it elevated my musical knowledge to a high level. It's not your typical music book but you can get so much out of it if you really give it a try. This book is an awesome piece of work by the author meant to be with you to check in on and open any page and come away having learned something.So glad I was able to get anew copy.

I’ve been playing informally for about 10 years now (no bands, very few gigs, sit-ins here and there, mostly personal enjoyment) so I’m not a “serious” player by any stretch of the imagination. However I have a decent understanding of the basics and this guide is the perfect fit for me. Very clear explanations and diagrams and an absolute powerhouse of information. Very excited to see where my playing goes as I’m working through it - it’s given me the push I needed to really grow in skill set and enjoyment.

For me it would have been greatly improved If what seem to be handwritten chord charts were more legible and at least 50% larger for my eyes. (Normal Eyes ) I also found the language in some portion of the book a bit on the abstruse/obstruse and dense side for me. Still I love the title and look of the book which still holds me hopeful and willing to struggle with its imperfections. I would not however recommend it to those who do not have a very sure footing with their theory, or beginners who can be discourage by the sense of insurmountable challenge.

There is a reason that this book has been reprinted; the information and the step by step process is great. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet, but I understand how things fit together in a way that I didn't before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that really wants to understand how chords work and how to use alternatives to for each chord progression.

Not much to add to the myriad of comments, except maybe don't go cover to cover like I did. It was like drinking from a fire hose. It's a great chord reference book!

Excellent book! It will take a lot of time to get all of this stuff under your fingers but it has helped me already with understanding the fret board better and how chords work, in addition I have learned a lot of cool chords I can use when composing stuff. Some of the chords are impossible to play (for me anyway) due to the large stretches involved.

About the Author
Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, British India, to British parents who had met and married in England two years earlier. Kipling spent his early years in India but was sent to England for his education. In October 1882, he arrived back in India not yet 17 and, lacking the money to continue his education, got a job working for newspapers such as the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore and The Pioneer in Allahabad. He wrote a huge number of stories and articles during ten years of working for newspapers. In 1888, he published his first book, “Plain Tales from the Hills” published in Calcutta in January 1888, which consisted of 40 short stories he had written for the newspapers. He published and sold several other stories the same year, one of which was this story “The Man Who Would Be King”, which became one of his most famous. On 9 March 1889, Kipling left India, traveling first to San Francisco via Rangoon, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. He then traveled across the United States and Canada, meeting Mark Twain in Elmira, New York. I love the George Hamilton Green exercises. I had to purchase this book again since someone stole my copy at a drum corps show. Unfortunately, the way Amazon stores their books, it was dog eared at the corners. It must be Amazon since I ordered two different books from two different locations and they both came to me in similar conditions. It would also be nicer if the book was bound a different way since you have to bend the pages back to keep it open on the stand.So I would say 2 stars for the seller/shipping. 5 stars for the actual exercises/book. This one is engraved, unlike the New Series. They're fun to play, fun to teach and works great on your dexterity skills. My teacher showed me these exercises when I was in high school and I still play them to this day. When I started teaching pit at a high school, I showed my kids these exercises and they loved them as much as I did. These exercises really helped me with double stop / single stroke accuracies.

It is impossible to read this book on Kindle for PC. Amazon should be ashamed for disabling this feature on Kindle for PC.

I am not a percussionist so this review is not very thorough. My 14yo daughter's teacher was excellent and used only this book. She polished a marimba piece and earned a superior at a solo festival. Mind you, she started with 4yrs of piano and her mom (me) has a BM in piano.

Good value and great for beginning xylophone players. Bought this for a student and we love it! So great to buy used and book is like new!

First of all, I am a seasoned amateur baker, not a professional pastry chef.If I could bring more than 5 stars, I willAs soon as I received this book, I started to check out the recipes. They are just fantastc!!! I do love baking so I have quite a few baking books. This is one of the best: Rose Levy gives you all the directions step-by-step through the instructions for making wonderful cakes: from the ingredients in volume (cups, tsp,...) and weight (ounces and grams), which is very helpful for me. Includes author notes, special equipment you will need and some tips... and photographs of every finished cake (which, in certain way, helps me a lot!)This book contents soooo many recipes separated in different cathegory: Butter and oil cakes, Sponge cakes, cheesecakes, Weeding cakes...It also contains "the golden rules of cake baking". In it, the author gives advices on what type of flour, butter, chocolate use, how to fill a cake pan. There is also guidelines for storing cakes and frostings.... and much moreI'm so excited with this book but specially with the way the author explains every recipe (that I've already ordered "Rose's Christmas cookies" and "The pie and pastry bible")I've already prepared the Barcelona Brownie (it is my husband's favorite!), Lemon Poppy seed cake, White chocolate frosting, Banana cake, carrot cake, and some others... They all are Amazing!!!... I just followed the directions and everything came as beautiful as shown on the pictures on the book.If you are interested in learn new recipes, in get new ideas or just looking for a book to start baking, this is the one you have to order (now!)Totally recommended!!!!

Could not give less than 5 stars as I have all her other books and her recipes always come out. Not every recipe has a photo but most due; when baking something like cakes her all want to have a visual of how the finished dish should look. Mostly I want the publishers to know that the ingredient print is impossible to read: it is in chart form (as all her books are) but it is Mauve print on a pink background in tiny font size. You could have used a black color with larger font size. To make these recipes I will need a magnifying glass or have to write it ingredients out.I have been experimenting and found I can change the font /page size enough to read the charts, but it would be a whole lot easier if they were ore in line with the rest of the fonts to begin with.

Rose Levy-Beranbaum has outdone herself in her latest offering of baking excellence! Where her "Cake Bible" was a standard for many years, this has outdone even that book!The first time I met Rose was at a tiny little bookstore in Chicago many, many years ago. She was there for the signing of "Cake Bible" and she was the very first professional baker/chef that I had met on the beginning journey of my road to serious baking/cooking. She was most kind and gracious and I remember thinking of what a wonderful life would lie ahead for this sweet lady. Needless to say, her "Cake Bible" became a standard for many people but this latest offering from her talented mind is exquiste and is by far, one of the very best learning and reference books ever! Also, within the last couple of years, I have enjoyed her website/blog which makes her even more accessible for general or specific questions on baking. The journey she took us on while making this wonderful new book was a joy to follow.It is a large, heavy, detailed book of cakes, cupcakes, bars, baby-size cakes with excellent photography, all printed on heavy, high-end paper to for which you would expect of books of this quality. Immediately at the introduction of each recipe, you have the serving size and baking time, followed by a brief synopsis of what she feels is the essence of that particular recipe. Then the "Batter" ingredients are laid out in a graphic form in which you are given the ingredients, with the Volume listed next to it, then the Weights of each ingredient, in both American and Metric form. Under this graph of information begins the steps to be taken beginning with any special equipment that would be needed, oven preparation, then the actual preparation of the batter. Any variations that could be taken, as well as "Highlights for Success" are listed and very much appreciated in that sometimes, there are little tricks, sidebars of information, and alternatives that you can incorporate into making the recipe a bit easier or more grand.For example, I never realized that the leavening agents within cupcakes require that you bake them immediately or they will lose the power of that ingredient, so unless you have a large oven to bake all the batter at one shot, you're better off making the batter in batches.Also, the presentation of these creations can be made so much more impressive with just a little creative help such as gingerbread boys and girls encircling a "Ginger Cheesecake" (who would have thunk it?) or using ladyfingers as an upright band of crust for the "Cranberry Crown Cheesecake" which also have a lovely wide ribbon around their base for an extraordinary presentation.Being someone who appreciates photography in a cookbook, the photo's contained within are both superb and generous, with close-up shots that show detail. There is also single or sequential photography for certain cakes that require more intimate knowledge of preparation or assembly such as the "Holiday Pinecone Cake" (it acutal looks like a pinecone) or how to make "Spun Sugar" or how to pipe the "Ladyfingers", etc. Sometimes, just one little photo will clarify a question in your mind and Rose seems to know which step would benefit from a photo. After a couple of years of doing relief and almost zero surgeries (other than a laceration or two), I decided I needed to de-rust my scalpel skills. The pictures are quite good. Each step is detailed and well described. However, the suture pattern is poorly written and confusing if you haven't done the pattern before. Additionally, though the author does mention anatomic landmarks, she does so rarely and only briefly. Ultimately, if you feel fairly confident but just want to brush up or want a simpler supplement to the Textbook of Small Animal Surgery, I think this is an excellent book. I would not recommend it for students though. There are more comprehensive, detailed texts out there.

All the useless facts that you can't remember anyway are left out. Presented in an easy to understand, easy to remember format. This is really all you need.Sure to take its place among the finest ever published for general surgeons.Yonatan Cohen ,Israel

Excellent book!!

I really liked the book, the informaiton is very clear, there are good tips in it, I would recomend this book to be a basic one in your Veterinary library.
