Review

"If this were merely a book by and for martial artists, it would still be interesting, but arguably not as important or even as provocative." -- Ron Breines  "Takes the refreshing approach of five modern people, from different backgrounds, offering you insights into what advice can help you versus which advice will sting you." -- Marc MacYoung  "We should argue what Musashi meant, particularly given more modern takes on morality and ethics. Read on, and make sure to bring an open mind." -- M. Guthrie"The authors have made classic samurai wisdom accessible to the modern martial artist like never before." -- Goran Powell, award winning author of Chojun and A Sudden Dawn"It's fascinating stuff!" -- Steve Perry, New York Times bestselling author"The precepts offer priceless advice to anyone." -- Kate Vitasek, University of Tennessee"The five point perspective inspired deep introspection. Books like these are why they say "Don't judge a book by its cover" or perhaps "by its title" would be more accurate. The precepts of Dokkodo, Musashi's actual words, serve as little more than chapter titles in this book.It would have been nice to see a book in this format that actually consulted some experts on, for example, Japanese literature or history, who could actually give some valuable context to Musashi's advice. Instead, a panel of five westerners from varying walks of life, but who don't seem particularly versed in or connected to Musashi's work, and approach each sentence as if they had just cracked open a fortune cookie. Not to knock the contributors here, they do each sound like impressive and accomplished people, but I don't think their advice and opinions (particularly when they deviate from Musashi's own) are what people are looking for when they buy a book called "Musashi's Dokkodo" that purports to be authored by Musashi himself. Often they will begin by disagreeing with the precept itself. Other times they will edit it themselves, as if they somehow had a better idea of what Musashi meant to say than whoever did the translating, or perhaps even Musashi himself. And frequently, they simply meander far off topic. For example, when faced with the precept of "Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling" one of the five contributors advises not to depend on a 'complete' feeling either, while another seems to think that "knowledge is power" is a close enough analog and gives their thoughts on that axiom instead. This could be a fine book on its own, if its title were a bit more accurate and what was inside matched what it said on the tin. Instead, it uses the legendary name of Musashi to cash in. That's a real shame.

Very annoying that Musashi is continually referred to as a psychopath. Was he? Perhaps, since every samurai n Japan was trying to emulate the type of warrior Musashi was, were they a country of psychopaths? I doubt it. And if being totally focused on violently ending an enemy, would the authors conclude that every American combat veteran is also a psychopath? It almost seems as though the authors are trying to distance themselves from the subject of the book, embarrassed to be talking about him.I would not for a moment deny Musashi's violence and the violence of the culture he lived in, or try to glorify that violence, but I am not sure that we can look back across time and judge people according to modern standards.

The book came in better than expected. I love Miyamoto Mushashi and his works. I have several copies of his most famous book "the book of five rings" When I heard he created a list as a guide to follow in life, it was a great find. A warrior monks way to live life reminds me of my early days about guidance for others. The book with its commentaries on that basic list makes it more helpful to give insight and perspective on the list and also how people apply it to their lives. Recommend both the supplier and the book.

Very interesting. Much better than "The Book of Five Rings".

Authors are making interpretations/assumptions from a different era, social values/structure, culture, ethnicity, and lifestyle. To make statements of conclusions with all these factors considered is a display of arrogance.

The Dokkodo itself fits on one page, and is freely available. I should have known that before I ordered this book, but I didn't. So I was disappointed because I don't really care about others interpretations. I just wanted to read the original words. Which are great! And are included.

I love this book and read it twice because it is such a rich book and there is much to be gained by re-reading it. The format is the best feature and I wish it was replicated in other books. The ancient text is interpreted by five modern perspectives, and this helps the reader digest the information and become the sixth interpreter of the work. One does not have to be a martial arts student to benefit from this great book. The lessons explored will help improve one's personal and professional life. I hope this is the first in a series of books in which 5 intelligent, modern voices help reveal the lesson from books that have survived through our history. I'd love to see them do Sun Tzu's the "Art of War" next.

Brushwood is fun to watch on video too. Cohesive common sense information but of course the tools and materials used are a little bit dated. The Houdini excerpt is awesome. I have nearly 20 years experience as a breather/performer and still found this book valuable because the concepts do not change. Know your fuels know your mediums, know your surroundings, get to know your pain and discomfort tolerance levels and safety safety safety always. For newbies: Eating breathing and fleshing fire is uncomfortable at best and it tastes terrible and you are guaranteed to get diarrhea and fuel burps. You are always at risk of chemical pneumonia from aspirating fuel into your lungs, or getting badly burned of not killed.Get this book but in the name of all things common sense do not do any of this without the supervision of an experienced fire performer and safety crew. Your crew can be one person other than yourself but always have a safety/spotter. ALWAYS. Do not do this without an experienced person with you. We know things you do not...very necessary things you need to know about fuel and mediums, timing, tricks, etc.Even I, having performed for nearly 20 years, do not do fire practice by myself. I like my face and house too much to burn them.

I am a professional fire eating instructor and this book is false information missing important key health protocols that may result in serious illness or death. He gives no consideration to Chemical Phenmonia, which next to Lung Flashes, are what kills fire eaters. He also teaches to use Kerosine as the fuel source for fire breathing (what he calls a fire blast). This fuel medium is the WRONG fuel and can result in serious injury. If you care for your health, I suggest seeking a fire eating instructor to teach you in person. And not risk your life to save a few bucks.

I bought this book after watching Brian Brushwood's youtube videos about fire eating. I was definitely impressed with this book, since it perfectly expanded those youtube videos putting a huge emphasis on safety. I have since learned how to eat fire properly, and can do plenty of very impressive fire tricks using this book as an instruction. I highly suggest that if you are wanting to try this, you read this book, AND watch his "Scam School" youtube videos about fire eating, since only a video with his instruction can truly show you the movements you need to make to properly eat fire.

New Kindle Fire10 and still the images from the book are garbled and unreadable. Not sure if it was a download issue or if the book just isn't properly formated for Kindle viewing.

This is a spectacular book. The price tag held me off on purchasing it for a few weeks while I tried to justify the 40 bucks or so on a book for a hobby, but once I received it, it was obvious why it's not the average Amazon paperback price, this thing is a text book. Not only is it about the size of my human anthropology book from college, but it's actually written in a readable way. If you are looking for a solid book on the topic, I have searched and this is really your only option; fortunately, it's a great option and worth every penny. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

I'm a professional fire performer with seven year's experience under my belt. This book is still on my library shelf after all these years. The tricks featured are pretty mundane and travel more towards the "magician" side of fire performing. However, the safety information is invaluable. Those just getting interested in the art will be pleased by the clear pictures demonstrating each step.

Very informative, covers everything you need to know before trying this skill, lots of quality safety information, good variety of tricks and some interesting history. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the art of fire eating.

Brian not only gives you the down & dirty - he tells you his horror stories....if you want to perform this crazy stunt and are a chicken head eating geek like myself....it's a great place to start....warmest wishes to all !

Difficult WomenBy Roxane Gay

Award-winning author and powerhouse talent Roxane Gay burst onto the scene with An Untamed State and the New York Times bestselling essay collection Bad Feminist (Harper Perennial). Gay returns with Difficult Women, a collection of stories of rare force and beauty, of hardscrabble lives, passionate loves, and quirky and vexed human connection. The women in these stories live lives of privilege and of poverty, are in marriages both loving and haunted by past crimes or emotional blackmail. A pair of sisters, grown now, have been inseparable ever since they were abducted together as children, and must negotiate the elder sister's marriage. A woman married to a twin pretends not to realize when her husband and his brother impersonate each other. A stripper putting herself through college fends off the advances of an overzealous customer. A black engineer moves to Upper Michigan for a job and faces the malign curiosity of her colleagues and the difficulty of leaving her past behind. From a girls’ fight club to a wealthy subdivision in Florida where neighbors conform, compete, and spy on each other, Gay delivers a wry, beautiful, haunting vision of modern America reminiscent of Merritt Tierce, Jamie Quatro, and Miranda July.

Review

Praise for Difficult Women:

“The characters who inhabit Difficult Women . . . aren’t just characters. They are our mothers, sisters and partners. They are human. They are us . . . Gay manages to capture entire lifetimes, painstakingly sketching women, the underlying drives that give them their shape and the indignities that color the lenses through which they see the world . . . These are real stories about real experiences and women seeking, deserving happy endings. They aren’t victims but survivors. Gay makes mosaics out of these women, seeing them as perfectly imperfect wholes in a world that routinely tries to break them down to pieces.”― USA Today (4/4 stars)

“Gay has fun with these ladies. Her narrative games aren’t rulesy. She plays with structure and pacing . . . She moves easily from first to third person, sometimes within a single story. She creates worlds that are firmly realist and worlds that are fantastically far-fetched . . . With Difficult Women, you really have no idea what’s going to happen next.”― New York Times Book Review

“The real gift to readers in Difficult Women is [Gay’s] ability to marry her well-known intellectual concerns with good storytelling . . . Gay excels in her allowance for human complexity . . . One of the book’s greatest achievements is Gay’s psychological acuity in the creation of female characters who are teeming with dissonance and appealing self-awareness . . . In a dark and modern way, this collection celebrates the post-traumatic enlightenment of women.” ―Washington Post

“In these bittersweet lives, Gay finds fierce tenacity that bends but doesn’t always break . . . Because Gay is such a vivid writer, her stories have a remarkable visual sweep. She puts her readers there . . . Gay’s women are complicated, broken in places, and misdirected . . . In Difficult Women, Gay gives these often-overlooked lives color and meaning. From a ramshackle Michigan trailer park to the affluence and ennui of a gated community in Florida ― and myriad points in between ― Gay writes of chances missed and unexpected joy, love gone awry or resurrected, and the slivers of hope that keep these fascinating women alive.” ―Boston Globe

“Gay’s signature dry wit and piercing psychological depth make every story mesmerizingly unusual and simply unforgettable.”― Harper Bazaar

“The stories, phenomenally powerful and beautifully written, demonstrate the threats so many women in reality face, but also how, whatever their situation, they have agency, resilience and identities away from stereotypes created and reinforced by men.”― The Guardian (UK)

“This collection begs for a slow, serious reading.”― Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Gay expands her writing prowess with this collection featuring colorful women protagonists . . . Refreshing yet intricate . . . This work will appeal to lovers of literary and feminist fiction.”―Library Journal (starred review)

“Gay brings the powerful voice that flows through her work as a novelist and cultural critic to the 21 short stories in her first collection . . . Gay’s ‘difficult women’ are unforgettable.”― BBC.com

“Gay tells intimate, deep, wry tales of jaggedly dimensional women . . . Be they writer, scientist, or stripper, Gay’s women suffer grave abuses, mourn unfathomable losses, love hard, and work harder.”―Booklist

“A powerful collection of short stories about difficult, troubled, headstrong, and unconventional women . . . Whether focusing on assault survivors, single mothers, or women who drown their guilt in wine and bad boyfriends, Gay’s fantastic collection is challenging, quirky, and memorable.”―Publishers Weekly

“A collection of short stories that will make your spine tingle with intrigue.” ―Bustle.com

“Astonishing, arresting, and staggering.”―Book Riot

“Unified in theme―the struggles of women claiming independence for themselves―but wide-ranging in conception and form . . . Gay is an admirable risk-taker in her exploration of women’s lives and new ways to tell their stories.”―Kirkus Reviews
